Palm-leaf painting
Palm leaf is called Olaichuvadi in Tamil. Hundreds of years back, before the invention of paper, people used to write and draw on palm leaves.

Strips of palm leaf are collected from different trees and then sorted on the basis of their similarity in appearance, colour and texture. These are then dried and stitched together with a string. These paintings are made by making incision with an iron stylus. Once the central etching and its outlying border have been scratched into the surface, natural black colour is then applied on the leaf. The leaf is then washed with water and the black colour in the etched figures give the final painting. The themes today are still religious but the forms and movement are distinct and display a beautiful fluidity.
